Matt Lauer fuels the Palin versus Couric morning ratings war

Posted by loricalabrese on April 2, 2012

And let the awkwardness begin.

The big news is that Sarah Palin will co-host NBC’s Today Show Tuesday and NBC is taking every opportunity to promote the event in an attempt to retain their #1 ratings status versus Good Morning America, co-hosted by Katie Couric this week.

Palin called into the show on Monday to talk about her upcoming appearance and although the hosts and Palin exchanged some pleasantries, Matt Lauer couldn’t help but fuel the fire in the Palin versus Couric morning show war when he asked what Palin was doing to prepare.

“Are you reading some newspapers?” Lauer asked.

“Great,” a good-natured Palin said. “That’s a fine how do you do? That’s a great start. Here we go.”

Sure the conversation was portrayed as all-in-fun, but it will be interesting to see how Palin interacts with the same media outlet that has a hateful obsession with her.

Palin took the high road and said she appreciated “NBC’s boldness for having [her] on.” She added, “Doesn’t it kinda reflect so much the diversity of opinion that I hear that you all espouse, so I appreciate it.”

It was announced that Palin will not only guest host the 8:00 a.m. hour, but also participate on the “Today’s Professionals” segment along with Dr. Nancy Snyderman, Star Jones and ad man Donny Deutsch. So can we also expect her to weigh in on the current political environment?

“Oh, my goodness. there’s so much to weigh in on and hopefully, you know, we won’t bore viewers with too much in-depth political talk,” Palin stated. “But there are so many issues going on with energy prices, and you know, some national security issues that have to be addressed. I think no matter what it is that we discuss, somehow it’s going to kind of turn into a bit of a political discussion because it’s just absolutely paramount right now that people are paying attention to what’s going on in our country in order to make good decisions to get it back on the right track, guys.”
