Governor Palin to Fundraise for Special Needs in Alabama

Posted by Adrienne Ross on March 2, 2011

Governor Palin continues her support for our special needs community. In May she will take this commitment to Alabama. Guy Busby of the Press-Register reports:

2008 Republican vice-presidential candidate and former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin will make her first Mobile Bay area visit May 3 when she addresses supporters of the Exceptional Foundation at a fundraiser at the Grand Hotel in Point Clear, organization supporters said.

The foundation is being established to help special needs children and adults in Baldwin County, Bob Callahan Sr., foundation board president, said. Palin, whose son Trig was born with Down syndrome, agreed to speak after being contacted, he said.

“This is something that is near and dear to her heart —children and adults with special needs — and that’s what brought her down here,” Callahan said. “We were thrilled. This is something that is really awesome.”

Callahan said organizers have not talked to Palin or her staff about the topics she plans to address.

“There might be some politics, but she agreed to come down here because of what we’re doing for special needs people and that’ll be a big part of it,” he said.

Work began in 2010 to start the foundation in Baldwin County. Organizers are working with the Exceptional Foundation established in Birmingham, which serves about 400 people and their families.

When efforts began to raise money for a building, staffing, activities and other needs, supporters decided to approach Palin about speaking, Craig Dahle, Callahan’s son-in-law and another of the group’s organizers, said.

“She was the logical person to kick start this with her background,” Dahle, who has a 19-year-old son with Down syndrome, said.
