I was perusing some genealogical sites and came across some folks’ genealogy. Here are excerpts from the ancestry of former Alaska Governor Sarah Palin:

1. According to genealogical research thus far, Ms. Palin’s “old country” ancestry is 55% British, 26% German, 19% Irish, and .39% Dutch.

2. Ms. Palin is a descendant of 10 of the 102 passengers of the Mayflower, the ship which brought English (Pilgrim) settlers seeking religious freedom to America (state of Massachusetts) in 1620.

3. 25 ancestors fought in the American Revolution.

4. She is a distant cousin of President Barack Obama. They both descend from Samuel Hinckley and Sarah Soule, who were married in England in 1617 and were among the first wave of New England settlers.

5. She is also a distant cousin of her 2008 running mate Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.). One of their common relatives is Edward I, King of England (1239-1307). Another one is William I, King of Scotland (1143-1214; President Obama is another one of this king’s descendants).

6. Ms. Palin is the 10th cousin of the late British Princess Diana. Ms. Palin and Lady Di are descended from John Strong and his wife Abigail Ford. Mr. Strong was born around 1605 in England, and later emigrated to the United States.

7. She is the 9th cousin, once removed, of former U.S. President Franklin D. Roosevelt. Their common ancestor is Rev. John Lothrop, who came to Massachusetts in 1634.

8. Ms. Palin descends from Roger Williams, a British-American theologian who co-founded the state of Rhode Island. He was the first U.S. practitioner of the separation of church and state.
