How much does Thomas Paine matter? More than Harriet Beecher Stowe? Less than Elvis? On a par with Dwight Eisenhower? Would you have answered these questions differently ten years ago? Will you answer them differently ten years from now? In a culture so saturated with information and so fragmented by the search possibilities of the Internet, how do we measure historical significance?

Steven Skiena and Charles B. Ward have come up with a novel answer. Skiena is the Distinguished Teaching Professor of Computer Science at Stony Brook University and a co-founder of the social-analytics company General Sentiment. Ward is an engineer at Google, specializing in ranking methodologies. Their answer involves high-level math. They subject the historical zeitgeist to the brute rigors of quantitative analysis in a recent book, Who’s Bigger? Where Historical Figures Really Rank.

Simply put, Skiena and Ward have developed an algorithmic method of ranking historical figures, just as Google ranks web pages. But while Google ranks web pages according to relevance to your search terms, Skiena and Ward rank people according to their historical significance, which they define as “the result of social and cultural forces acting on the mass of an individual’s achievement.” Their rankings account not only for what individuals have done, but also for how well others remember and value them for it.

Their method requires a massive amount of big data on historical reputation. This they found in the English-language Wikipedia, which has more than 840,000 pages devoted to individuals from all times and places, plus data extracted from the 15 million books Google has scanned. They analyzed this data to produce a single score for each person, using a formula that incorporates the number of links to each page, the number of page visits, the length of each entry and the frequency of edits to each page. Their algorithms differentiate between two kinds of historical reputation, what they call “gravitas” and “celebrity.” Finally, their method requires a means of correcting for the “decay” in historical reputation that comes with the passage of time; they developed an algorithm for that, too. By their reckoning, Jesus, Napoleon, Muhammad, William Shakespeare and Abraham Lincoln rank as the top five figures in world history. Their book ranks more than 1,000 individuals from all around the world, providing a new way to look at history.

Skiena and Ward would be the first to acknowledge that their method has limitations. Their concept of significance has less to do with achievement than with an individual’s strength as an Internet meme—how vividly he or she remains in our collective memory. The English-language Wikipedia favors Americans over foreigners, men over women, white people over others and English speakers over everyone else. In their rankings of Americans only, past presidents occupy 39 of the first 100 spots, suggesting an ex-officio bias.

That’s where we come in. Smithsonian magazine has been covering American history in depth from its inaugural issue, published in 1970. Among the Smithsonian Institution museums we work closely with is the National Museum of American History. By synthesizing our expertise with the systematic rigor of Skiena and Ward’s rankings, we sought to combine the best of quantitative measures and qualitative judgment.

First, we asked Skiena and Ward to separate figures significant to American history from the world population. Then, rather than simply taking their top 100, we developed categories that we believe are significant, and populated our categories with people in Skiena and Ward’s order (even if they ranked below 100). This system helped mitigate the biases of Wikipedia.

We have highlighted what we decided was the most interesting choice within each category with a slightly fuller biographical sketch. And finally, we made an Editors’ Choice in each category, an 11th American whose significance we’re willing to argue for.

Sarah Palin warns CNN’s Zucker to “get ahold of your underlings”

I thought I’d seen it all, but this one leaves me with that punch-in-the-gut, flabbergasted shock that I can’t shake anymore while witnessing the media’s free fall into that damaging darkness covering America. The media is at fault for so many aspects of the division and hopelessness running rampant in our society. It’s not the people – it’s the media perpetuating a sense of injustice and despair, resulting in apathy or desperation in homes and communities all across our country. The degradation falls on your shoulders, media principals. Though many have tried to give CNN the benefit of the doubt with their overall news coverage (in fact I’ve even been happy to publicly point out issues CNN has fairly covered), shame on us if we continue to support their unprofessional, hypocritical, and unethical news coverage. It’s truly sickening, yet strangely laughable, their underestimation of the wisdom of their audience. Compare these two videos Bristol highlighted in her latest blog post:

http://www.patheos.com/blogs/bristolpalin/2014/10/compare-these-two-videos-2/

This example makes me physically sick because they spit in the face of every American who has fought for freedom and sacrificed to protect everyone’s First Amendment rights. It’s not because this issue involves my daughter; it’s because Carol Costella, her ilk, and her boss are disgustingly dismissive and disrespectful of the sacrifices made that allow them a platform from which to broadcast their hate and stupidity. CNN is lucky to have their few outstanding employees that shine through the darkness that is CNN. I admire the good ones, and hope they land at more deserving companies when CNN goes under. Zucker, not for my sake, but for the sake of a cornerstone of our democracy—the press—get ahold of your underlings. They make you look really, really bad, and they are ruining America.

Gov. Palin: The choice is clear: Rob Maness for Senate in Louisiana

Maness Momentum continues in Louisiana! “The Great One” Mark Levin has spoken and Col. Maness is his man for the U.S. Senate from the Pelican State! Last week for the first debate the GOP establishment’s “chosen one” didn’t even bother to show up. No wonder really – he’d have a hard time deciding which side he’s on. President Reagan said “trust but verify.” Check out Congressman Cassidy’s long liberal record, folks, of votes to raise the debt ceiling, votes for President Obama’s “hate crimes” legislation, votes supporting amnesty for illegal aliens, and his long record of support for liberal pro-choice candidates including the very one he’s running against now – Senator Mary Landrieu! Heck, Bill Cassidy even openly opposed Ronald Reagan! Is this the best the GOP can do? Nope. Folks, if we want to WIN in Louisiana, we need to stand in clear contrast to the liberal ways of Obama/Landrieu/Reid. We need to stand with someone who stood tall in uniform for us for 32 years – conservative Col. Rob Maness (USAF, ret.). Please check out the Breitbart article below where I discuss my recent trip to Louisiana and the path to victory for Col. Maness, and watch this video from last week’s debate. The choice is clear: Rob Maness for U.S. Senate.

Here is the article at Breitbart that she linked to:

Exclusive–Sarah Palin Draws a Line in the Swamp: Col. Rob Maness Must Win Senate Race Against Cassidy, Landrieu

Former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin, the 2008 GOP vice presidential nominee and a conservative kingmaker, is doubling her efforts in Louisiana to get retired Air Force Col. Rob Maness elected to the U.S. Senate over GOP Rep. Bill Cassidy (R-LA) and incumbent Democrat Sen. Mary Landrieu (D-LA).

“Those folks in Washington should visit Louisiana like I have recently,” Palin told Breitbart News exclusively when asked what to make of the GOP establishment efforts to push Maness out of the race. “The momentum, enthusiasm, and dedication for Rob Maness is real, and I’ve seen it – along with a few live gators! The other candidates have spent millions on the air bashing each other with uninspiring ads.”

“Rob’s hard work and his one creative gator-wrestling ad got his message out. He campaigns much like we did in Alaska – going voter to voter and door to door,” she explained. “He’s visited all 64 of Louisiana’s parishes in his Ford F-150. He even drove it to the event we had two weeks ago. He’s had 50 town halls and is the only candidate in the race to put forward positive, conservative solutions. He is the breath of fresh air Louisianans crave, and the polling data is reflecting that.”

“I’m so glad ‘The Great One’ Mark Levin agrees and has jumped on board for Col. Maness, and I hope others will follow suit!” she stated.

Palin has been Maness’ most high profile and powerful supporter, and her backing comes amid a difficult year for grassroots conservative candidates.

In next door Mississippi, the GOP establishment slaughtered state Sen. Chris McDaniel—engaging in what many conservatives, including McDaniel, called widespread voter fraud and a get-out-the-vote effort in Democratic Party stronghold communities to support six-term incumbent Sen. Thad Cochran (R-MS).

In Tennessee, the establishment-backed incumbent Sen. Lamar Alexander (R-TN) won an unexpectedly close primary race after state Rep. Joe Carr ran an aggressive campaign against him there.

And in Kansas, incumbent GOP Sen. Pat Roberts (R-KS) is facing the fight of his political career against liberal pro-amnesty “independent” Greg Orman after beating Tea Party-backed Milton Wolf in the primary, who had a strong showing against Roberts.

But now the Tea Party is aiming to strike back in Louisiana. The unique election laws and jungle style general election allows Maness to face off against Cassidy and Landrieu at the same time—and if nobody gets 50 percent on election day in November, the race will head to an expected runoff.

What’s unclear, however, is which Republican will face Landrieu in said runoff. Right now, it would probably be Cassidy. But Maness is polling at 18 percent according to a CC Advertising poll conducted Sept. 30—a poll highlighted by Maness’ campaign in a polling memo—to Cassidy’s 34 percent and Landrieu’s 40 percent. Another poll conducted the same day by Public Policy Polling, a Democratic firm, had Maness at 12 percent to Cassidy’s 34 percent and Landrieu’s 40 percent.

Take that with the jungle election system, and Palin says there’s a good shot for Maness to come from behind to beat Cassidy into the runoff and then take Landrieu down.

“Louisiana has the most unique and free election system in the country where voters have so many options and time to review,” Palin told Breitbart News. “All Rob needs is a few more points in the polls to get him into the runoff where we know he will stand in stark contrast to Sen. Landrieu’s liberalism and 97% support of the Obama agenda.”

Maness definitely has some momentum going for him. Palin has been extremely active in this race, and on Monday evening radio’s Mark Levin endorsed Maness over Cassidy and Landrieu.

“All right, ladies and gentlemen, I’ve been weighing this one for quite a while now,” Levin said. “There’s actually one election left in three weeks in Louisiana that involves a few Republicans running and of course landfill-Landrieu running and there could be a run off among the top two candidates if neither one gets fifty percent. You got landfill-Landrieu, you’ve got a guy named Cassidy who is a through-and-through RINO and then you’ve got a conservative running by name the name of Rob Maness.”

Levin said he knows “it’s an uphill fight” but told his listeners nationwide, “quite frankly ladies and gentleman, I’m used to them.”

“Rob Maness, I’m going to endorse you for the Senate in Louisiana and I hope all my brothers and sisters listening in the state of Louisiana, residents of the state of Louisiana will take a good look at Rob Maness – he is the conservative in the race,” Levin said. “The polling shows him behind, but we’re always behind. But anyway Maness for Senate in Louisiana, that’s my final endorsement in these these races and it’s doable if the people of Louisiana want to conservative up against Landrieu, who can in fact beat Landrieu and who will be a conservative in the U.S. Senate.”

“So, once more, I endorse Col. Rob Maness, retired, for the U.S. Senate in Louisiana, that’ll be a surprise to him and his supporters cause I have given it a lot of thought over the weekend, no prodding by anybody and just decided to do so  on my own,” he explained.

Palin told Breitbart News that if Maness wins, Washington will be trembling.

“This race reminds me much of the Nebraska primary with Deb Fischer. Both races were really ‘two of them vs. one of us’ – politicians looking for promotion or longevity vs. an American patriot running to help fix Washington!” Palin said. “Electing an American hero like Rob Maness, someone who has put service over self and who has sacrificed so much for love of country, is just what we need in the Senate.”

“Rob will stand strong against politics as usual from any establishment and will not waver in the face of the Obama agenda like so many others in DC,” she explained. “He will be a conservative warrior because it’s in his blood and in his heart. He’ll stand with the good guys like Ted Cruz and Mike Lee. The U.S. Senate won’t know what hit them when Rob Maness shakes them up.”

Gov. Palin talks about oil at Trinity Christian School fundraiser in Williston, ND

Posted by Dr. Fay on October 15, 2014

Posted on Governor Palin’s Facebook page yesterday

Had a wonderful time in Williston, North Dakota, last night. Responsible resource development has led to a huge economic boom there. The chant “Drill, Baby, Drill” is understood and appreciated in North Dakota! They’re showing America how to live and preserve the American dream by rockin’ the Bakken, showing how domestic energy brings prosperity and can lead to America’s security. The city of Williston itself has tripled in size, and North Dakota oil production is up 445% since 2008. North Dakota now leads the nation in agriculture, oil, job creation, personal income growth and even “people’s overall well-being.” They got there by responsibly utilizing all the God-given resources put here for mankind’s use.

Special thanks to our friend Rob Port for keeping us updated over the years about North Dakota’s tremendous progress. Rob grew up in Alaska and was the little brother of my friend and basketball teammate, Katy Port. Back then “Robbie” was just a cute little kid coming with us on basketball trips, entertaining us with his toddler sense of humor. Now he’s a big shot blogger in North Dakota with his “Say Anything” blog being the state’s most popular political blog and one of the top conservative blogs in the nation!

The event in Williston was a fundraiser for Trinity Christian School. Got to meet some of the nicest salt of the earth people from the heartland. It was great to see David Barton (who also spoke at the event), as well as the musical entertainment provided by Ernie Haase and Signature Sound. Trinity Christian School is doing a wonderful job living the message in Proverbs 22:6, which instructs us to: “Start children off on the way they should go, and even when they are old they will not turn from it.”

Thank you again to everyone who made last night’s event possible. North Dakota, keep up the good work! You’re leading by example with responsible energy development, balanced budgets and positive pro-life legislation.

Sarah Palin Speaks in Williston

Posted: Oct 14, 2014 12:04 AM EST Updated: Oct 14, 2014 12:04 AM EST

Sarah Palin, who was a candidate for vice president when John McCain ran for president six years ago, addressed a sold-out auditorium at Williston State College this evening.

Palin was in Williston as a keynote speaker for the Trinity Christian School fall banquet.

[…]

Palin talked about oil production and the impacts it can have on christian education.

Early in her presentation she spoke of previous time spent in North Dakota including her favorites: a UND hockey game and the Northern Lights this far ‘south.’

(Sarah Palin, Former Governor of Alaska)”Driving to and from North Dakota to see our son, I remember early, early one morning, it was very dark outside, everybody’s asleep in the rig and I’m at the wheel and I am shocked to look up and see these spectacular Northern Lights in North Dakota. I had no idea.

Palin was the first woman and youngest governor of Alaska to run on a republican presidential ticket — and listed as one of Time magazine’s 100 most influential people in the world.

Like most every American I stand by our U.S. military vets! Thank you to our active duty heroes and all who’ve served this great country in the past. I was honored to speak at a recent fundraiser in Texas for The Mighty Oaks Warrior Foundation to support our returning troops who have left the battlefield overseas, but face new battles upon their return. America owes them a debt of gratitude, and our troops suffering from PTSD must not be ignored by a grateful nation. In the following video, I discuss what Mighty Oaks does for our vets. Gov. Palin: Obama’s praise of Bin Bayyah at the UN reveals dear leader’s heart

Obama’s Praise Betrays Us

As I told a Washington, DC audience this weekend, “We can survive the Error of Obama; it’s almost over, and we can survive this President. The question is, can we survive the people who voted for him a second time?” Barack Obama’s praise this week for the Muslim cleric who advocated killing our U.S. soldiers is one of the most appalling stunts we’ve seen. He’s been enabled by the low information voters who gave him a second term to express his true beliefs in a perversely refreshing way that allows even the ill informed to now realize who our Commander in Chief really is. For all the world leaders to see, he quoted and promoted Sheikh Abdallah Bin Bayyah at the UN despite the cleric’s organization having declared a fatwa to kill U.S. soldiers and stating all Jews should die. Bin Bayyah, according to Barack Obama said:

“Look at the new Forum for Promoting Peace in Muslim Societies—Sheikh bin Bayyah described its purpose: ‘We must declare war on war, so the outcome will be peace upon peace.’”

Of all the people to praise on an international stage, Obama would twist and deceive the world into believing Bin Bayyah is a man of peace representing a religion of peace. This cleric is affiliated with various anti-American groups, was vice president of an organization founded by the Muslim Brotherhood (which also called for the killing of Jews and Americans), and during the 2013 White House public tours shut-down when Obama refused to allow American citizens to visit the public sections of the People’s House, Bin Bayyah was invited into the private areas of our White House.

This week saw more than the disrespectful latte salute of America’s finest. We saw and heard from dear leader’s heart who he deems worthy of praise.

Gov. Palin: Meriam Ibrahim’s strength is inspiring

Posted by Dr. Fay on September 28, 2014

Posted on Governor Palin’s Facebook page today:

Had a great time at the Values Voters Summit in Washington, DC. Inspired by many of those I got to visit with including Meriam Ibrahim whose strength is inspiring. Imprisoned in her native Sudan for converting to Christianity, Meriam was sentenced to death. She gave birth to her second child, a daughter named Maya Wani, in prison while still shackled to the floor. After the outcry of Christians and other people of faith across the country and the world, Meriam was freed. Never wavering from her belief in Christ, Meriam explained how she did not waver by telling us, “Faith means life. If you don’t have faith, you’re not alive.”

Gov. Palin campaigns with Rob Maness at alligator restaurant in Louisiana

Posted by Dr. Fay on September 28, 2014

Governor Palin campaigned for Colonel Rob Maness in Crown Point, Louisiana on Saturday.

Cole Avery at NOLA.com reports:

Sarah Palin holds an alligator during Rob Maness campaign event

Sarah Palin has made a lot of stump speeches, but the wide-eyed look on her face showed Saturday’s might have been her first to feature a live alligator.

Palin attended an event for Senate candidate Rob Maness at Restaurant des Familles in Crown Point. Following the speech, Maness surprised the former Alaska governor with a three-foot gator.

The visit from the scaly guest — courtesy of Insta-Gator Ranch in Covington — was met with zydeco music and a standing ovation from the 100-plus Maness supporters in attendance.

“She just laughed about it,” Maness said. “She’s a warrior for American and a warrior for freedom. I’m honored to get her endorsement, but I’m honored she’s prioritized our campaign.”

“Mama Grizzly” and the “Alligator Hunter” served the guests a variety of alligator-inspired foods, a throwback to a Maness ad where he wrestles an alligator.

Palin has endorsed Maness in his race to unseat Democratic Sen. Mary Landrieu over the Republican establishment candidate, Rep. Bill Cassidy. She compared Maness to other conservative favorites like Sens. Ted Cruz, R-Texas, and Mike Lee, R-Utah.

“He knows the issues and what Washington, D.C., does to a state like Louisiana,” Palin said. “We need a fighter in D.C. that doesn’t just go with the flow.”

Palin had equally tough talk for both the Republican establishment and the Democratic Party.

“Rob has the added challenge of going up against the establishment. The folks in the GOP are in it for a season, not a reason. It’s a business for them,” Palin said. “Rob is standing up for the average, hardworking American who is saying, ‘Enough is enough.’ The status quo has got to go.”

She also took aim at Landrieu by joking about her residency controversy and linking her to President Barack Obama and other Democratic Party leaders.

“Mary has tried to have it both ways. When you’re in the middle of the road, you get hit on both sides,” Palin said.
