Why Andrew Breitbart Walked into the Fire with Sarah Palin

Whenever Andrew Breitbart saw that somebody was being unfairly maligned by the institutional Left, he became that person’s stalwart defender. Sarah Palin, perhaps more than any other person in recent history, endured the full weight of what Breitbart called the “Democrat-media complex,” and so Sarah Palin had no more fierce a defender than Andrew Breitbart.

He never explicitly endorsed her for President–Breitbart, as a rule, didn’t endorse candidates. He wasn’t a policy wonk, nor did he enjoy punditry–Breitbart’s sights were consistently set on the media. He understood how the media can shape, influence, or even manipulate the general public’s perception of events and individuals. A favorite theme of the Progressive media’s smear-machine, and one which was aimed with particular savagery at Sarah Palin, is the notion that Conservatives are, in a word, dummies. One need not look very far for specific examples.

If Barack Obama claims to have visited all 57 states, we are told he was simply tired and misspoke. If Dan Quayle misspells potato, we are told that he is the stupidest man to ever set foot in Washington, D.C.

If Barack Obama refers to Navy Corpsmen as corpse-men, well, don’t say anything about that because shut up and you’re a racist. If Sarah Palin ends a sentence with a preposition, we are told she is the stupidest woman to ever set foot outside of Wasilla, Alaska.

In the meantime, and in the real world, Barack Obama has made Sarah Palin look like a prophet:

• In 2008, President Obama said he wanted to close Gitmo. Sarah Palin said it was a bad idea. Five years later, Gitmo is still open. Point: Sarah Palin.
• In 2009, the Obama administration said it wanted to put the September 11th terrorists on trial in New York. Sarah Palin said it was a bad idea. In 2011, the Obama administration concluded that holding the trial in New York was a bad idea. Point: Sarah Palin.
• President Obama and Nancy Pelosi used every trick in the book to force Obamacare, also know as The Affordable Care Act, down America’s gullet. Sarah Palin said it was a bad idea. Three years later, we see doctors dropping Medicare patients by the boatload and insurance companies forecasting premium increases as high as 400%. Point: Sarah Palin.

So, who’s the dummy?

Many Americans, to this very day, believe that Sarah Palin said, “I can see Russia from my house.” I have had to explain, on numerous occasions and to people who are otherwise well-educated and ostensibly intelligent, that it was in fact Tina Fey, a comedienne, who said that. That so many people, years later, continue to mistake an SNL skit for reality is a testament to the power of the media, to the power of manipulating perception–and the abuse of that power is precisely what Andrew Breitbart so passionately resisted.

But if Andrew Breitbart fiercely defended Sarah Palin, Sarah Palin also taught Andrew Breitbart an important lesson–one which he took to heart for himself, and one which he imparted to others wherever he went: refuse to be destroyed. Do not cower before the name-calling. Do not apologize for your beliefs. Do not hide.

If somebody calls you a racist for criticizing the Obama administration, demand that they explain how you’re a racist. If somebody demands that you apologize, respond with, “Apologize for what?” If somebody rhetorically attacks you, punch back twice as hard. Breitbart called this “walking into the fire.” He observed that Sarah Palin, by refusing to back down in the face of the smears, became stronger–and by refusing to retreat, she became a touchstone for millions who felt that her peril was their own. And so her resistance became their resistance.

Andrew Breitbart, tragically, is no longer here to walk into the fire with Sarah Palin–or any other targets of media malpractice. His legacy, Breitbart.com, and others must carry the mantle forward from where he left it. As the director of Hating Breitbart, which released nationwide May 17th, I had the profoundly unique experience of following Andrew during the closing years of his life, capturing him walking into the fire again and again on behalf of those who believe in a small, limited federal government, sustainable fiscal policy, and above all, those who revere genuine honesty in reporting.

I was asked today by a reporter if any groups in Iowa were targeted by the IRS.   I didn’t know at the time.  I now have my answer.  The Coalition for Life of Iowa when it was applying for tax-exempt status received a letter from the Internal Revenue Service requesting details about their prayer.

The excerpt of the letter in question…

Please explain how all of your activities, including the prayer meetings held outside of Planned Parenthood, are considered educational as defined under 501(c)(3).  Organizations exempt under 501(c)(3) may present opinions with scientific or medical facts. Please explain in detail the activities at these prayer meetings. Also, please provide the percentage of time your organizations spends on prayer groups as compared with the other activities of the organization.

Wow, wow and wow…. Apparently the folks that wrote this didn’t realize that churches who are also 501(c)(3) organizations (usually) pray a lot and offer opinions all of the time.  So the idea they can only present opinions with “scientific or medical facts” is categorically false.

This on top of the news that the Treasury Department knew about this scandal back in 2012.  Surely they didn’t keep it quiet to shield President Obama did they?

Scandalous Hat Trick

Mr. President, when it rains it pours, but most Americans hold their own umbrellas. Today in the Rose Garden you dismissed the idea of a Special Counsel to investigate the IRS scandal. With that, your galling political hubris shined bright in the midst of today’s dark clouds.

Mr. President, how can we trust your Justice Department to conduct an independent investigation when there is a systemic violation of the Hatch Act throughout your administration?

Surely you are aware that the Hatch Act prevents certain federal employees from engaging in political activity. Specifically, it’s illegal for these federal employees to engage in action in support of or in opposition to a political party, a candidate for partisan political office, or a partisan political group.

Yet that is exactly what’s happened within the IRS, the Justice Department, and in the Benghazi cover-up. This scandalous hat trick is on your watch. It is not believable that you knew nothing about Obama administration actions in dealing with these scandals. And in regards to Benghazi, when you should have taken appropriate action to save American lives – for instance by calling in the Marines – you were AWOL. Just weeks before the election your team scrubbed the Benghazi talking points in 12 different versions, lied to the American people about some YouTube video being to blame for the deaths of brave Americans who put our country first, and you prove Michael Barone right when he writes, “What actually happened in Benghazi was out of sync with the Obama campaign line.” That’s why you all did what you did. Pure raw politics were at play during a horrific time of loss.

For more evidence of Hatch Act violations right under your nose, simply consider DOJ’s “massive and unprecedented intrusion” into the free press. Do you think they picked up some political talk when tapping the phones in the House press gallery?

Your team is out of control. Those who cannot remember the past and learn from it are doomed to repeat it, and that is exactly what is happening. Look back exactly 40 years ago this week and apply that disheartening chapter of American history to the team you’ve chosen and lead today.

Some of us warned America; we cautioned voters in 2008 that a community organizer with no executive experience and no sense of accountability would be a very poor choice for the nation’s top management position.

Mr. President, you said today that you have “complete confidence” in the Attorney General. America doesn’t. Eric Holder needs to appoint an unbiased Special Counsel to investigate the illegal political action of this administration. And then Eric Holder needs to resign.

Most Americans see ominous dark clouds looming beyond the White House Rose Garden, Mr. President. They’ll roll away only when light is shined on the Obama administration’s antics, and America will only recover when you cease avoiding responsibility in this mission of yours to fundamentally transform America. For that to happen, the press had better learn from their experiences of being duped and provide a deserving public fairer, more intelligent coverage.

Speaking of coverage, glad you finally called in the Marines… shame it was just to hold your umbrella.

Tyler Weyer and his fellow seniors at Republic High School began considering possible commencement speakers last fall.

Confronting them was the reality that the most likely speaker would be a popular teacher or a standout community member. Not that there’s anything wrong with that.

But Weyer had a crazy thought. “I said, ‘Hey, let’s just get Sarah Palin,’ ” said Weyer, the 17-year-old senior class president at Republic High.

RHS principal Shawn Anderson said Weyer has been an enthusiastic and outspoken fan of Palin’s for a few years. A young man with a strong interest in politics and government, “Tyler … and Sarah Palin kind of went hand in hand,” Anderson said.

When Weyer threw out the notion of inviting Palin last fall, he was encouraged by his teachers and Anderson. Why not give it a shot?

Weyer typed an invitation, Anderson had it put on school letterhead and signed it, and it went off to Palin’s parents. Weyer had tried to reach Palin through official sources in the past, with no success, and so he thought going through her parents might work better – and they were listed in the phone book. Soon thereafter, Weyer received an e-mail response from “one of her people” that was noncommittal.

“To be honest, I really wasn’t surprised that the message got to Sarah,” Anderson said. “I really believed she would at least see the letter and maybe some of the e-mails.

“But I didn’t think our chances were so high.”

Months passed with no further word. In early April, still awaiting an answer and running out of time, Weyer decided to push things along.

“I got impatient, so I organized a class picture,” he said.

He got his classmates together in their class sweatshirts, and they made a banner: “We Want You! Governor Palin!” School librarian Kelly Scriver took the photo of them posing with the banner, and they posted it on Facebook.

And then – in what is becoming a familiar pattern in the age of social media – the sharing and the liking and the tweeting began. As word of the Class of ‘13’s efforts spread, people began lobbying Palin directly, via Facebook and other ways. Weyer said that Palin has some relatives living in the Republic area, which might have helped bring their efforts some attention, and Palin herself was born not far away in Sandpoint, where her parents have a long history.

Whatever it was, something finally broke through. As Weyer put it, “the right word got to the right people.”

He received another e-mail, wanting to know: “Can we just get the date and time again?”

“That was definitely more promising,” he said.

Then came another e-mail from Palin’s people – this time to set up a phone call with him and school officials.

“People told me I looked pale as a sheet when I got that e-mail,” Weyer said. “I said, ‘Oh my goodness. I’m getting pretty excited. Something’s going to happen here.’”

On April 18, Weyer and school officials had the phone call with Palin’s representative, and learned that Palin would be coming to graduation.

“It was worth a million dollars to see the look on (Weyer’s) face,” Anderson said.

Anderson’s priority is to preserve the event as a commencement ceremony – something focused on the students and their families.

“This isn’t going to be a circus and this isn’t going to be a political statement,” he said.

Weyer says that Palin’s representatives have expressed similar wishes. “She doesn’t want a frenzy,” he said.

Still, certain frenzy-like elements are bound to accompany the appearance of a figure like Palin. Each graduate gets 20 tickets to distribute for the 1 p.m. commencement ceremony on June 1, and then admission to the small gym will be first-come, first-served. There’s room for around 700 people; Anderson expects he’ll be turning people away.

Weyer said the event is the talk of the 1,000-resident town.

“Everyone’s asking for tickets,” he said. “Everyone’s very ecstatic.”

Hillary Clinton Fired From Watergate Committee for Fraud, Ethics Violations

The former general counsel and chief of staff of the House Judiciary Committee, who supervised Hillary during the Watergate investigation, says her history of lies and unethical behavior goes back farther – and goes much deeper – than anyone realizes.

Now comes this bombshell from Jerry Zeifman, who supervised a much younger Hillary Clinton when she worked as a staffer for the Watergate committee:

‘A lifelong Democrat, Mr. Zeifman supervised the work of 27-year-old Hillary Rodham on the committee. Hillary got a job working on the investigation at the behest of her former law professor, Burke Marshall, who was also Sen. Ted Kennedy’s chief counsel in the Chappaquiddick affair. When the investigation was over, Zeifman fired Hillary from the committee staff and refused to give her a letter of recommendation – one of only three people who earned that dubious distinction in Zeifman’s 17-year career.’

Why?

“Because she was a liar,” Zeifman said in an interview last week. “She was an unethical, dishonest lawyer. She conspired to violate the Constitution, the rules of the House, the rules of the committee and the rules of confidentiality.’

Mr. Zeifman also had this to say about a Hillary campaign rally in Connecticut in early February of this year:

‘I have just seen Hillary Clinton and her former Yale law professor both in tears at a campaign rally here in my home state of Connecticut. Her tearful professor said how proud he was that his former student was likely to become our next President. Hillary responded in tears.’

‘My own reaction was of regret that, when I terminated her employment on the Nixon impeachment staff, I had not reported her unethical practices to the appropriate bar associations.’

This is no small potatoes, like the cattle futures dustoff. From Mr.Zeifman’s account, Hillary and others on the Committee, including former senior associate special counsel (and future Clinton White House Counsel) Bernard Nussbaum – engaged in a seemingly implausible scheme to deny Richard Nixon the right to counsel during the investigation by stealing Judiciary Committee files on the only precedent case that could have stonewalled their plot and drafting a legal brief that, according to Mr. Ziefman, “was so fraudulent and ridiculous Hillary would have been disbarred if she had submitted it to a judge.”

Sarah Palin Says ‘No’ to Mark Burnett for TV Talk  Show

Former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin has been offered a major  syndicated TV talk show by reality show producer Mark Burnett but turned down  the deal, Newsmax has learned.

One of country’s sought after speakers on  the political circuit, Burnett believed he could turn Palin into the next Oprah,  offering to produce a daytime TV talk show hosted by the conservative icon  herself.

But so far, Palin has said no — though the deal is not  completely dead, say insiders.

The sticking points have been over  location and money, people familiar with the deal say. Burnett has insisted  that Palin do the show from either New York or Los Angeles, which would require  her to move for a significant portion of the year from her residence in Alaska  where she lives with husband Todd.

Palin has a distaste for cultural  elites in the Big Apple and LA, one person familiar with the discussions  said.

Another top  Hollywood studio executive tells Newsmax that Palin was ultimately willing to  move to either city, but “she passed over money.”

Asked to comment about the offer, Palin told  Newsmax via email: “Todd and I have always loved working with Mark Burnett, and  our family is always up for adventure, so never say never.”
